Homeowners rue the day summer rolls around because it means increased cooling bills and maybe even installing a new air conditioner. Air conditioners are considered a first line defense against the heat but are expensive to outfit for the whole house and also run. On top of that air conditioners do not solve the root of the problem which is preventing heat from entering the house at all.

A more comprehensive answer lies in outdoor shades and assorted accessories for cooling the house exterior. Outdoor shades serve at least two purposes if not more. First, they help shade the exterior area especially patios and porches that may in fact be heavily used. Second, they help reduce the amount of incoming light that go through doors and windows. In addition to outdoor shades, there are also accessories which synergize and enhance their effects.

One such device is the exterior outdoor mister. It consists of a series of pipes with regularly spaced openings that release a fine mist over an area. Coupled with a misting fan, the evaporation of the mist leads to cooling of the area by up to 10 degrees. The mister works best in dry climates and poorly in humid ones.

With respect to patio shades, there are three common types used by people in the patio.

A patio canopy is basically a specialized word for a very large tent. There are two aspects to the tent-like configuration of a canopy: a steel scaffolding and a section of canopy material that is stretched over it. Many canopy owners would like to have at least the roof of a canopy covered with shade material. The fabric for the walls aren’t necessary, a decision that depends on whether a canopy owner wants to give up a little privacy for a cool breeze.

The majority of people have seen a patio awning. Awnings for personal use have advanced far beyond traditional fixed-frame and single fabric construction. Contemporary awnings retract automatically in strong winds, are motorized and remote controlled. There are several types of retractables. One is opened or closed with an unpowered mechanism. Another makes use of a swinging configuration which is slid in or drawn out. Lastly the motorized kinds automatically open at a push of a button.

A patio pergola is simple wooden structure that stands on four or more columns in a rectangular configuration. Instead of supporting shade fabric, it holds wooden bars that give partial shading and some sunlight. A related outdoor shade to the pergola is the garden arbor. The arbor is smaller in size, much simpler in construction, but cannot shade many people at once. In recent times it’s largely a decorative element of the garden.

A number of options are available to those who are thinking of increasing the value of a house: think renovation, improvement, or structural addition. The renovation process can entail something as simple as repainting a wall to ripping out old kitchen cabinets and installing new ones. Improvements encompass anything from altering the layout of a bathroom to knocking down walls to increase space. The last option, addition, entails putting new structures into or onto the house.

A big addition job that many elect to undergo is the addition of more rooms, perhaps extending into the backyard on the first floor, and subsequently increasing the number of levels. However, this type of work is very costly and requires a serious commitment in time and of money. Something that will be within reach of more people is to add a small structure ot the house.

A type of addition that many do not consider is an outdoor shade. These come in a range of complexities, from hanging bamboo shades on the outside of a window to retractable, electrically-driven window awnings. Depending on the complexity the cost can be driven very far down. Moreover, the outdoor shade enlarges the usable space of the house while remaining economically viable for the budget conscious homeowner.

The following are some of the most popular outdoor shades used by people for adding usable space and increasing the value of a home.

Canopies are tent-like structures. There are two parts to the tent-like configuration of a canopy: a metallic scaffolding and a piece of canopy material that is stretched over it. The shading fabric almost always is affixed over the roofing to shield against direct sunlight but the side-walls may be omitted. Side-walls hamper air circulation, but such problems can be remedied by ensuring presence of window flaps and opposing entrances to the canopy.

The majority of people have seen an awning at some time positioned over the storefront or display glass of an establishment and bringing in precious patrons who were likely sheltering themselves. In contrast to store front awnings, the units for home are made for pleasure and comfort of homeowners. The most recent type is the retractable unit. There are a number of retractables. One is operated by a manual crank. Another is engaged with a swinging set-up which is pushed in or pulled out. Finally the motorized kinds automatically open at a flick of a switch.

Pergolas are a special sort of outside shade because they do not provide complete shading. They permit a bit of light. The design is fairly straightforward on paper but needs a fair amount hard work to set up. A number of posts are put into the floor which support a number of top slats. These overhead slats block out a bit but not all light. Miniature variants of pergolas are also available. They are sometimes termed arbors, and are less complicated to put together but cannot shade many people. Instead, they are guide posts for foot paths.

In the summer, the weather turns comfortable, many people will plan or hold social gatherings in the backyard, on a porch, or in the wonderful home garden. Having the event outside gives the party-goers a chance to experience the nice weather, but also allows the party-giver to take care of many more guests than is feasible inside the house.

Despite what may be good weather on average, occasionally unexpected rain or thunderstorms can end up making even the best party plans come to naught. Homeowners have found that the best solution to this is to buy or rent an outdoor canopy to shelter their guests. Not only does such an outdoor shade shield against precipitation and gusts of wind, it also hides them from curious prying eyes of onlookers interested in the party.

A canopy is a tent-like structure, propped by up a lightweight metal frame. A heavy-duty outdoor shade fabric is anchored and draped over the frame to provide shelter. The fabric is often synthetic, as canvas is susceptible to mildew and dirt. Sometimes there will be fabric draping on the sides to provide a temporary wall, but simpler canopy shades don’t even need fabric walls. Some opening is necessary to maintain fresh air in what is otherwise a small space.

Canopies might not be needed for weather protection if the garden or backyard is quite small and not many guests are expected. Instead, an awning or outdoor umbrella will do the trick. But the number of people that will fit under the smaller structures is quite limited. A mid or large size canopy is the only means of making sure a large number of guests will be protected from poor weather.

Purchasing an entire canopy can be problematic for two reasons. One, such products are quite pricey given that they are used only once or twice a year if the outdoor events are rare. Two, storage of a disassembled canopy is difficult without specialized storage space. The way around this problem is to rent one. Various party supply stores or outdoor furniture stores will carry a selection for rental.

One more problem associated with buying a canopy is that it needs to be cleaned at least once or twice a year. While it lies in storage, it can gather dust and dirt. For both natural and synthetic fabrics specialized cleaning solvents are available. Soap and water may be ok too depending on manufacturer specifications. The solvents can be loaded into portable industrial spray devices that efficiently cover large areas.

However, even in the summer the weather sometimes turns bad by being too hot. To obviate problems such as heat stroke, planners can save their parties with the use of an outdoor misting fan. These devices will protect guests by keeping the local environment cool and moist.

The process of liquid evaporation requires a tiny bit of heat energy in the surrounding environment. This is known in atmospheric science as evaporative cooling. Humans sweat when it is hot so that when the sweat evaporates it cools down the body. Dogs pant and hang their tongues out because the tongue is a source of moisture and heat that benefits from evaporation. The outdoor misting fan does the same by increasing evaporation.

The effects of the outdoor misting fan can be amplified with the use of other kinds of garden shading products. Most shade products reduce heat by reflecting all the light away. But the mister actually absorbs energy using evaporative cooling. Together the two work together to really bring down ambient temperature. The following is a discussion of three kinds.

The outdoor misting fan can be combined with an exterior canopy, which is essentially a large-version of a tent. The set-up a consumer usually comes into contact with at a retailer is a large standing metal skeleton draped with a large section of shade material. The fabric for the walls are optional, a decision that depends on whether one wants to cede some privacy for good circulation.

The second type of outdoor shade used often with the outdoor misting fan is the awning. The majority of people have seen an awning at some time positioned over the entrance or display glass of a business and luring in valuable customers who may have been only sheltering themselves. One can obtain both manual and powered retractables. The automatic ones are controlled by motors, often managed by remote control.

The third type of shade used with an outdoor misting fan is the pergola. A pergola is an unassuming wooden exterior shade that is held up by four or more beams in a rectangular configuration. Instead of supporting shade fabric, it holds wood bars that give partial shading and partial sun. Miniature variants of pergolas can also be found, recognizable by the term arbors.

The traditional home awning is composed of a metal frame onto which a shade fabric is stretched for shading purposes. The metal frame may be fixed or retractable in some way. The position of the frame is either over a window or door, and occasionally can cover a front porch or patio. Fancier awnings at home may be remote controlled or automatically retractable in the event of rain.

Despite the conveniences offered, many homeowners are reluctant to install traditional awnings due to the costs. The structure itself is quite expensive, and the installation even more so given the complexity and size of the product. A very modest home awning can cost thousands of dollars. Worse still, the shade fabric will require regular cleaning as it’s a repository for microorganisms and dirt. This is complicated by the inaccessibility of the top of the fabric.

Another problem is the dilemma faced by a homeowner when he or she needs to entertain children or guests somewhere further from the immediate vicinity of a wall, for example at the barbeque grill, near the pool, or in the middle of the lawn. The fixed outdoor shades can’t be moved around in any way.

Such problems are solved with the help of the simple yet highly effective freestanding awning. It’s also composed of a frame that holds the outdoor shade fabric, but instead of being stationary, it rests on a set of wheels which allows it to be pushed around. When it’s not needed, the shade frame may be pivoted and folded so it can be stored in the least amount of space.

As far as outdoor shades are concerned, the freestanding awning is much easier to clean because the frame that holds the shade fabric can be easily pivoted so the top surface swings down. This makes it easier for spraying with detergent and washing down with water. Depending on the type of fabric, a special cleanser may be required. However, these will be no different from the cleansers used for traditional attached awnings.

These unattached types of outdoor shades are much cheaper for two reasons. One reason is that it’s installation requires no special expertise, such as drilling into the frame of a house or wiring up the retractable mechanism. Another reason is that the construction is much simpler so the costs of production are lower. Best yet, because it’s not attached to a fixed structure, the unattached awning can be moved around as desired to where it’s needed most.

I became charmed with the drama of outdoor patio lights at an exceptionally romantic restaurant in the old part of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We sat in the courtyard garden surrounded by outdoor art sculptures while rope lights wandered up and down the trees. It was the first time I had recognized the beauty and impact of outdoor lighting and outdoor art. I was mesmerized. Since that initial night I have visited many other romantic restaurants and have admired their outdoor lighting and outdoor art but nothing makes an impact like the first night.

At my own house, I have tried to replicate the feel of bringing the indoors out which is what properly placed outdoor patio lights should do. I have met with moderate success and I love to experiment. In choosing your outdoor lights there are a number of things you should always consider. I have tried to list the 4 most important considerations below.

1. Determine the purpose of your outdoor lighting. Is the lighting going to be primarily functional and safety oriented or will it be more atmospheric? Some amount of outdoor lighting is needed for general safety. These bright outdoor patio lights should be placed at every door including your garage door. Other types of lighting can be simply for atmospheric effect. Lighting for effect can be dimly illuminated. Mood lighting should be changed about for greater dramatic effect.

2. Determine the placement of your outdoor lights. Be sure to highlight any outdoor sculptures you may have or a pond or a swimming pool. You can use rope lights to highlight distant objects. Often lovely and simple white Christmas lights make a nice year-round twinkly setting. The lights needed for safety should be by each door of your house at a minimum. It must be relatively easy to maintain safety lights. If the light requires a 20 foot ladder to change and you don’t have a 20 foot ladder then the light position should be changed.

3. Type of light. There are numerous types of outdoor patio lights available these days. Of course the most popular and energy efficient are LED lights. The cost of LED lighting has really come down and these are the lights most recommended. There are also solar lights. Solar lighting has also become less expensive but these lights are slightly less reliable and often don?t give off enough light. Placement of solar lights is critical to their function and shouldn’t be counted upon in cloudy or rainy areas. Solar lights likely work best as atmospheric lights and shouldn’t be used as safety lights.
